West Virginia University’s Office of the First-Year Experience coordinates all programming for first-year students transitioning from high school to college. It organizes and executes the highly effective transition class, University 101, which is required for graduation from WVU. The First-Year Experience also operates several Academic Resource Centers on campus, which offer free tutoring to students in need. These, along with many other programs, create a seamless package of orientation programs that includes academic support services, outstanding faculty mentoring and innovative student life programming. The First-Year Experience has helped foster a higher retention rate among first-year students, and has made the overall experience for University freshmen more enjoyable with programs such as Welcome Week. As the summer progresses, many incoming freshmen and their parents will see the First-Year Experience at New Student Orientation.
